For some companies MDL worked on systems that are described as "from cradle to grave", having in one system all information required to decide if a chemical product can be made and can be sold.

A special case is formulation. For instance, you can describe the pill aspirin using the ISIS technology. It allows graphically to present many structures on a page, in addition you can add items for which you don't know a structure, i.e. a filler. Then you can write next to the structures the amount of each ingredients making up the final pill. You can search by each item.
