Any cheminformatics project needs a solid technical foundation. The picture shows very schematic research process, the big arrow in the middle, and the two major task that confront the scientist after he has chosen his idea what to do. He needs chemicals to prove his idea, and internal and external information to verify his idea.

This involves many applications that need to be build with a certain technology. ORACLE, ISIS, and Isentris became the industry standards for managing chemical information.

See "Main projects needed to improve the research process", for what needs to be done after the infrastructure is in place. The infrastructure must be in place before anything can work. This does not mean that this is the first thing in the planning stage. How many people buy first a computer and then the software? Hopefully, not many any more.
